This round woven basket is unique among artist Ira Blount’s creations for having a lid. The lid incorporates a carved wood openwork floral design. This combination of woodwork and weaving demonstrates Blount’s mastery of multiple mediums. The Calvert County Fair awarded this basket the First Place Blue Premium Ribbon.
The Basket Bunch, a craft guild in Prince George’s County, Maryland, featured this object on their Facebook page when honoring Blount. The basket has a unique connection to Blount’s engagement with community organizations dedicated to arts and crafts.
After moving to Washington, DC following World War II, Ira Blount mastered dozens of artisanal crafts. His love for crafting, learning, and community engagement would endure over the course of his long life and career.
