Description

Leon Barritt (1872-1938) was a reporter, editor, cartoonist and amateur astronomer in New York City. Garrett Putnam Serviss (1851-1929) was a New York writer who specialized in astronomy, travel and history. Working together they created a moveable and inexpensive planisphere. The inscription at the top of this example reads “THE BARRITT-SERVISS / STAR AND PLANET / FINDER / COLLABORATED BY LEON BARRITT AND GARRETT SERVISS.” Another inscription reads “U.S. PATENT OCT. 2, 1906. BY LEON BARRITT. PATENTS APPLIED FOR IN ENGLAND, GERMANY, FRANCE AND BELGIUM.” Yet another reads “COPYRIGHTED, 1906 / BY / LEON BARRITT / PUBLISHER / NEW YORK CITY.” The form was still available in the 1930s.
