Time’s cover and cover story for April 10, 1964, were special because they showcased an entertainer—Barbra Streisand—and a writer—John McPhee—both at the start of successful, award-winning careers. The prolific McPhee would go on to win many literary distinctions, including a Pulitzer Prize. Streisand would win seemingly countless singing and acting awards, including an Oscar for the film Funny Girl (1968), based on her hit 1964 Broadway musical, which McPhee had glowingly reported on that spring. Of note too is this portrait from life by painter Henry Koerner, who snagged three sittings with the burgeoning twenty-one-year-old Streisand in her New York City penthouse.
