Barbara Walters has redefined the role of women on television news. She started at CBS as a producer and writer in the 1950s, and by the 1960s she was in front of the camera at NBC. She changed the tenor of her position by not shying away from serious topics and became the Today Show’s first female co-host in 1974. Walters moved to ABC in 1976 when the network hired her as the first woman to co-anchor the national evening news. She later became the co-host of ABC’s 20/20. Walters has interviewed world leaders, including Israel’s Menachem Begin, Cuba’s Fidel Castro, and Egypt’s Anwar Sadat, and brought celebrities to tears in her legendary year-end conversations on The Ten Most Fascinating People. In 1997 she developed the morning program The View. Initially seen as a gamble for ABC, the program proved a success and is still on the air even after Walters’s retirement.
The Ten Most Fascinating People.
