Harding, Warren G.
Description
Warren G. Harding, senator from Ohio, was the 1920 Republican presidential nominee. When he defeated his Democratic opponent James Cox, the governor of his home state, Harding became the first president to be elected while serving in the Senate. Harding also defeated Socialist candidate Eugene V. Debs who was running for the fifth and last time. Even though Debs was in prison during this election (having been found guilty of sedition during World War I), he received almost 914,000 votes, the most ever recorded for a Socialist on the national ballot.
