On June 11, 1954, Senator Ralph Flanders (standing) interrupted the televised Army-McCarthy hearings by striding through the standing-room-only crowd in the Senate Caucus Room to hand an envelope to Senator McCarthy. It contained a note announcing Flanders’s intent to denounce McCarthy on the Senate floor. One of McCarthy’s most outspoken critics, Flanders had risen to indict McCarthy on two earlier occasions. On March 9, he railed against the senator for diverting the nation from “far more dangerous problems” than the threat of homegrown Communism. On June 1, he assailed McCarthy as a menace to the United States.
After reading Flanders’s note into the hearings’ record, McCarthy ridiculed him, declaring, “I think they should get a man with a net and take him to a good, quiet place.” Despite this rebuke, Flanders’s challenge to McCarthy echoed a growing shift in public opinion toward the powerful senator.
