State Railway of Thailand photographs of Miao people

Biographical/Historical note

The official State Railway of Thailand began as the Royal State Railways of Siam, established under the Ministry of Public Works in 1890. The department controlled all state and private railways in the country. In 1951, the State Railway of Thailand Act B.E. 2494 renamed the organization and established it as a state enterprise. Gunther Lubbeke was an employee of the World Bank, for which he may have appraised Thailand's railway systems.
