Collection Citation

Smithsonian Institution Archives, Record Unit 156, United States National Museum. Division of Vertebrate Paleontology, Records

Note

The material from 1930-1940 is arranged chronologically. From 1946-1957, material is arranged (with the exception of a single folder which also contains 1946 material) chronologically by fiscal year (July-June) and alphabetically thereunder. This material was labeled by the Division, "Examination and Reports," and though a good portion of this material contains correspondence pertaining to the identification of fossil specimens which had come in to the United States National Museum for just such a purpose, there is also outgoing correspondence pertaining to inquiries on vertebrate paleontology; acknowledgments for receipt of fossils given to the USNM; requests from universities for publications; requests by Smithsonian staff members to publish outside the Smithsonian; staff salaries and staff positions; requests for funds for the purchasing of fossil collections; requests for funds for attending professional meetings; plans and fund requests for research field trips; reports on field explorations and fossil collections made during the exploration; and annual report material. Important correspondents include Ray S. Bassler, David H. Dunkle, William F. Foshag, Charles Lewis Gazin, and Arthur Remington Kellogg.
