Scope and Contents
This series contains approximately 4363 photographs that were mostly shot by Dr. Leuman Waugh during his research and travels in Arctic Alaska and in the Newfoundland and Labrador regions of eastern Canada circa 1921-1938. Among the depictions are images of indigenous people and communities; indigenous food and diet; activities such as hunting, whaling, and fishing; houses and buildings such as post offices and churches; towns and villages; landscapes and waterscapes including icebergs; and transportation via ships, canoes, kayaks, and dog sleds, among other scenes.
Also included are scenes of Dr. Waugh performing dental examinations and work on indigenous patients, as well as scenes of vaccinations in indigenous communities. These photographs are restricted.
A few additional photographs were also shot in New York City and Wyoming in the US and in the Bering Straits in Russia.
Many of the lantern slides in this collection are mostly hand-colored by an unidentified artist.
