Scope and Contents

Consists of images documenting Schiedt's interests including ballrooms, night clubs, the Cotton Club, the Lyric Theater and Mississippi river boats. Materials relating to United States locations known for music include Chicago, Harlem, Indianapolis, Iowa, Hollywood, Michigan, Missouri, New Orleans and New York. Schiedt maintained files on different types of musical groups including circus bands, carnival bands, college bands, Kansas City African American bands, Storyville bands, ensembles and Jump recording sessions. There are materials relating to collectors' activities and events including jazz meetings, the International Association of Jazz and Record Collectors (IAJARC) conventions, Conneaut Lake festivals, Elkhart Jazz festivals, Jazz at Chautauqua, French Lick festivals and the Ohio Valley Jazz festival. There is also some material relating to Gennett Records which was founded in Richmond, Indiana by the Starr Piano Company. Gennett Records played a major role in recording early jazz on its label, including such artists as Jelly Roll Morton, Bix Beiderbecke, The New Orleans Rhythm Kings, King Joe Oliver's band, Hoagy Carmichael, Duke Ellington and many others. Information relating to Art Kane's photograph "A Great Day in Harlem" is also found among these materials. Kane took the photograph in 1958 of fifty seven jazz musicians for a special issue of Esquire magazine. Materials that could be identified are arranged in alphabetical order by subject. Unidentified materials were grouped by type of group or subject and include all male groups, all female groups, coed groups, solo men, solo women, buildings and Felix and Robert Chiplis photographs.
