Scope and Contents

Includes the personal papers of the oldest daughter of Frank Sherman and Mary Elizabeth Sandford. Ruth Louise Sandford was born in Dansville, New York on August 26, 1879. She attended Albany Teachers College and spent her early life as a teacher. She worked with the family business and assumed full responsibility in 1924 until 1967. Ruth never married. She cultivated a life-long interest in the American Red Cross, served on the board of directors and was chairman of the memorials committee for the Dansville Hospital, was a member of the Dansville Baptist Church, a member of the Shakespeare Club and a board member of the Council of Livingston County Historical Society. Ruth Louise Sandford died at the Chimneys Nursing Home in Rochester, New York on September 14, 1972. Materials consist primarily of Ruth's diaries dating from 1904-1961. Like her father she begins to document her life at the age of 25. There is a scrapbook, correspondence, newspaper clippings, mementos from trips, postcards, a yearbook, and typewritten notes about her life written for the Hornell Tribune by William Connelly in 1972. The materials are arranged first by type and then in chronological order.
