Extractive Industries

Contains a group of black and white photographic images maintained by staff as a group of material relating to the industrial process of extracting raw materials including coal, oil, iron, rubber, steel, and timber from the earth for consumer use. A large portion of the images document mining processes, equipment, and locations. The series is arranged in seven subseries: subseries 2.1, coal; subseries 2.2, iron; subseries 2.3; gemstones, subseries 2.4, mining; subseries 2.5, oil; subseries 2.6, rubber; subseries 2.7; steel; and subseries 2.8; timber. Subseries 2.1, Coal, 1886-1945, undated Include black and white images of photographs, maps, and diagrams relating to the coal industry primarily in America. The images are of mines; mining processes and drilling methods; machinery and equipment; labor communities including families engaged in mining; product and labor statistics; land valuation; rescue work; and fire coal facilities. There are a few images of mines in other countries including Rhodesia, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Germany, Great Britain, Poland, Saar, Czechoslovakia, and Holland.
