Scope and Contents
This series consists primarily of typescript incoming and outgoing correspondence of W.Parkes Millington, mining engineer and agent for the Girard Estate. The correspondence covers a variety of subjects such as railroad track removal, excavation projects, contract and agreement negotiations, samples and testing of anthracite, repairs of roads in townships, shipments and local sales of coal. Many of the files also contain maps detailing specific land tracts being mined. Speicifc information about leases for the Girard Edsate are found in the City of Philadelphia Trustee/Girard Estate correspondence files.
The Anthracite Institute--a research and statistical organization maintained by the coal industry--includes general memos to its members (coal companies) about federal wages and laws, copies of Anthracite News and reports.
The Locust Coal Company correspondence includes an employee buletin Our bread and Butterwhich details production statistics, employee poayroll and how many men are in service.
The Schuylkill-Northumberland Taxpayers Association which was conceived and sponsored by the major coal companies includes minutes of the meetings, tresurers reports detailing expenditures and funds, and taxes levied on various townships. W. Parkes Millington was secretary of the association.
