Piece of paper with typed explanation of amulets: "A frequent type of amulet in Spanish colonial days in Puerto Rico, was the written prayer. It was hand-written and often taken to a spiritualist or to a witch who "prepared" it with special prayers during a ceremony. It was then folded and carried in a pocketbook, the pocket, etc, or worn as a charm against evils or to bring good luck. Because of their fragility and constant use they wore out easily and few old ones have remained. These are rare examples of this ancient custom.
