Edward and Gaye Ellington Collection of Duke Ellington Materials, Archives Center, National Museum of American History.

Scope and Contents

Materials include black and white and color prints and slides documenting Duke Ellington's musical career. Included among these materials are images of Duke Ellington alone and with the Duke Ellington Orchestra. Duke Ellington can be seen performing in concerts, receiving awards, in candid shots with band members, composing music, signing autographs, with family and friends, meeting with presidents and heads of states, with military personnel, with other musicians and on television appearances. There are also a number of photographs documenting the Ellington Orchestra on international tours in places such as Argentina, Burma, Czechoslovakia, England, India, Iraq, Jamaica, Japan, Jordan, Yugoslavia, the Philippines, Sweden and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. In addition, there are some candid and publicity photographs of Mercer Ellington with the Ellington Orchestra under his direction. The photographs are arranged by subject and the slides are arranged in chorological order.
