Scope and Contents

Drama group practicing scene. Four girls are seated on chairs. One girl is laying on a bed with her eyes shut and an arm outstretched, another is seated on the bed with a hand to her face, whilst another kneels beside the bed and is comforted by a woman bending down to her. A poster on the wall reads, "Enroll your child and inspire youth to seek a life of value - Dramatic Classes - Speech - Poise - Mental Discipline - Self Assurance - Self Expression - Creativeness - Qualified Instructors - Register Now". There are framed photographs from films and plays on the wall. No ink on negative. Ink on envelope: caption. "KODAK -- SAFETY -- FILM" edge imprint. Retouching on faces and arms with New Coccine.

Biographical / Historical

Gregoria Fraser Goins founded the Corda Club in Washington, D.C. and was a piano teacher at the Washington Conservatory of Music and School of Expression. However it is not known if the Goins referred to in this caption is Gregoria Fraser Goins. (Information taken from "New Perspectives on Music: Essays in Honor of Eileen Southern", Review author[s]: Marsha J. Reisser, American Music, 1993, University of Illinois Press).

When the Museum purchased the collection from the Estate of Robert S. Scurlock, it obtained all rights, including copyright. The earliest photographs in the collection are in the public domain because their term of copyright has expired. The Archives Center will control copyright and the use of the collection for reproduction purposes, which will be handled in accordance with its standard reproduction policy guidelines. Archives Center cost-recovery and use fees may apply when requesting reproductions.

Collection is open for research. Gloves must be worn when handling unprotected photographs and negatives. Special arrangements required to view negatives due to cold storage. Using negatives requires a three hour waiting period. Contact the Archives Center at 202-633-3270.
