Scope and Contents

Copy negative of an oval matted portrait of Anthony Bowen. The original subject appears to be a hand-painted photograph (sometimes called a "crayon portrait"), possibly dating from the 1860s. Ink on negative: "Mr. James Porter H.U." (crossed out) and "Anthony Bowen". Two pieces of masking tape are on the base side of the negative. "K" written in the right-hand corner of the original envelope. "A.N." is written and "SCURLOCK 900 YOU ST., N.W. WASHINGTON, D.C." is stamped on the envelope also. "EASTMAN--SAFETY--KODAK 52" edge imprint. No Scurlock number.

Biographical / Historical

James Porter was a painter and professor of art at Howard University. This copy negative might have been made for his use. Anthony Bowen, a former slave, founded in 1853 the 12th Street YMCA, located at 1816 12th Street, N.W., in the Shaw neighborhood of Washington, D.C. (See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthony_Bowen.)

Subseries Rights

When the Museum purchased the collection from the Estate of Robert S. Scurlock, it obtained all rights, including copyright. The earliest photographs in the collection are in the public domain because their term of copyright has expired. The Archives Center will control copyright and the use of the collection for reproduction purposes, which will be handled in accordance with its standard reproduction policy guidelines. Archives Center cost-recovery and use fees may apply when requesting reproductions.

Collection is open for research. Gloves must be worn when handling unprotected photographs and negatives. Special arrangements required to view negatives due to cold storage. Using negatives requires a three hour waiting period. Contact the Archives Center at 202-633-3270.
