Scope and Contents
Content: Televised awards ceremony recognizing the contributions of African American musicians and performers. Fitzgerald, one of the honorees, was not able to attend due to poor health. Mel Torme introduced an overview of her work and spoke about their long friendship. Debbie Allen accepted the award for Ella. Dizzy Gillespie, another honoree, spoke after his music was played by Harry "Sweets" Edison.
