Company Management

American History Museum

Object Details

Collection Creator

Frick Company, George (Waynesboro, Pa.)

Collection Citation

Frick Company Collection, 1852-1961, Archives Center, National Museum of American History.

Scope and Contents

This series contains material related to the management operations of Frick and Company, including accounting paperwork such as checks and promissory notes, bank correspondence, balance/cost sheets, and tax receipts; sales paperwork and agent supplies; communications material, including cipher telegraph codes for transmitting orders country-wide as well as telegraph transmission receipts from the Pacific & Atlantic Telegraph Company, and public relations material featuring the newspaper documentation of the labor strike in 1946. Much of this series, especially in Subseries 3.2 Sales and 3.3 Communications, consists of samples of blank forms and paperwork related to all these activities which date from the 1880s and 1890s, including many examples of Frick letterhead and printed return envelopes, mostly from the Waynesboro factory, but also for road agents and branch offices of the company. Aside from one folder containing examples of negative press in the late 1920s, Subseries 3.4 contains material taken from scrapbooks of newspaper articles and ad pages about the year-long labor dispute between Frick Company management and its unionized workers in 1945 and 1946, detailing its effect on the Waynesboro community. Also included is correspondence from Frick to its shareholders regarding the strike, and a few letters of support from Frick clients in support of the company.
