Collection Author

Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company

Collection Citation

The Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company Records, Archives Center, National Museum of American History.

Scope and Contents

The series consists of monthly accounts of bills paid out by LCNC and LNCC, Inc. Specifically, the books give the date, entry or voucher number, name of account, amount of bill, and account paid from. Other continually changing columns give a description of the account, number and date of receipt of warrant, date sent to auditor, date sent to Philadelphia office, and amounts paid out of accounts such as supplies on hand - mining, real estate mining district expenses, cost of coal production, main openings, reserve for mining hazards, mine developments, cost of culm bank coal production, improvements and developments in progress, material and supplies, workmen's compensation, disbursements, Lansford individual ledger, township roads, and miscellaneous, cumulative totals are listed at the bottom of each page and are brought forward to the top of the next page. Monthly totals are listed at the end of each period. A monthly summary or recapitulation of vouchers which balances with the total of the monthly itemized bills is included in Volumes 1-3. Voucher numbers run sequentially for each year until mid-1911 when they begin to run sequentially for only one month at a time. Monthly accounts run consecutively in all volumes except accounts in Volume 3 which are in reverse order and the 1944-1945 accounts in Volume 8 which precede those of 1937-1943. Volumes 4 and 5 have indexes in the front. Accounts posted are with companies such as those handling drilling, manufacturing, lumber and bolt production, rail transportation, utilities, hardware, supplies, steel production, brick-making, and electric construction. A number of accounts are with individuals. The volumes are in chronological order.
