American History Museum

Object Details

Collection Author

Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company

Collection Citation

The Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company Records, Archives Center, National Museum of American History.

Scope and Contents

This series consists of the book cost and depreciated value of collieries including mines, offices, washery plants, power houses and sub-stations, railroads, shops, and storehouses, 1898-1912. There are a few inventories showing the cost of fire arms and mules and an inventory of improvements, 1909-1910, made to the Kaska-William Colliery of the Alliance Coal Mining Company. Entries in the inventories, in most cases, are listed under the number of the colliery. Only occasionally is the name of the colliery listed. Colliery "No. 1" is Nesquehoning; Nos. 4-6, Lansford; Nos. 8, 9, 12, Coaldale; Nos. 10 and 15, Greenwood; No. 11, Rahn; and No. 14, Tamaqua. Inventory data is available, with only a few exceptions, for colliery Nos. 1, 4-6, and 8-12 for 1898-1912. Inventory information for colliery Nos. 14 and 15 covers the years 1907-1911. Also included for the later years are several other types of inventories: adjustments to inventories of material and supply accounts for most collieries, 1935; an inventory of the laboratory, 1937-1943, located at the general office, perhaps, at Lansford Colliery; and portable equipment and hand tool inventories from the Stripping Department at Summit Hill Colliery, 1934-1939, from Tamaqua, 1936-1940, from Landsford, 1937-1945, and from Coaldale, 1939-1947. The inventories are arranged chronologically.
