Biographical / Historical
Davies differentiates the package delivery services provided by "air express" airlines from the US Mail. Although there were experimental services in the early part of the century, particularly those of the American Railway Express Company (AREC) in 1919, the first regular air express service was established in 1927 with the partnership of AREC and National Air Transport (NAT). The United Parcel Service (UPS) began air express services two years later. By 1936, all airlines in the United States operated under a single nationwide air express system. In the late 1960s, a new class of airline arose which specialized in overnight package service, using its own fleets of aircraft.
