Biographical / Historical
Painted near Fredericksburg, Texas, "Commanche Country," 1849. Eastman did pencil sketch entitled "Live Oaks Near Fredericksburg, Texas, with Encampment of Caddo Indians," also in 1849. (McDermott, 1961, pages 69-70); reproduced in McDermott, plate 66. "Similar to a pencil sketch bearing the legend, "Camp Houston near Fredericksburg, Texas, 65 miles north of San Antonio - Dec. 30, 1848;" and "left this camp March 10, 1849 for San Antonio" -- (Whatmough, Bushnell Collection Catalog, page 12).
