Scope and Contents
"Young Gold Miner Watching Sunday Mine Dance, Witwatersrand, near Johannesburg, 1948." Original caption by Constance Stuart Larrabee. Photographic image of a young man with one arm raised over his head. He is standing in a mine compound in front of a window with gate on it. The shadow of a wire gate can be seen across his body. Photograph by Constance Stuart Larrabee, 1948.
This photograph was featured in a brochure in conjunction with Constance Stuart Larrabee's exhibit "South Africa 1936-1949, Photographs by Constance Stuart Larrabee at the National Museum of African Art, Sept. 20 1998- Feb. 28, 1999.
These images were taken in mining compounds in the Johannesburg area, where African miners, migrant workers recruited from all over southern Africa, lived in segregated quarters. As a form of entertainment, miners performed dances and played music on Sundays. These performances attracted white visitors, who received permission from the white owners of the mines to attend. Constance Stuart captured many of the images in this series during such an event.
There are two 8x10 black and white fiber-based prints of this negative in the Constance Stuart Larrabee Collection. EEPA also produced an 8x10 study print for reference purposes.
