Scope and Contents

Kimberley Diamond Diggers Working, 1948. Kimberley diamond diggers are working to find diamonds. This diamond mining set-up is typical of the river diggers, which contrast between the modern and complicated machinery of the De Beers Mines in Kimberley. This is the diamond digging area called "Nooitgedacht," twenty miles outside of Kimberley. The De Beers Company issues licenses to the individual diggers. Photograph by Constance Stuart Larrabee, 1948.
This image was found among the Johhannesburg Black South African series and has been catalogued in that sequence. However, the images themselves were taken during the Kimberley Diamond Mines shoot and should be viewed in relation to this shoot.
There are no prints of this negative in the Constance Stuart Larrabee Collection. EEPA produced an 8x10 study print for reference purposes.
