"Elenzileni School for the Blind, 1948." Original caption by Constance Stuart Larrabee. Photographic image of a blind man sitting on a curb in front of a doorway making baskets. There is a stack of circular baskets behind him. Photograph by Constance Stuart Larrabee, 1948.
This photograph was published in Constance Stuart Larrabee's book "Constance Stuart Larrabee: Time Exposure." (Yale Center for British Art: New Haven, CT, 1995.)
Constance Stuart took these series of photographs in a clinic and educational institution for blind Africans called Ezenzelini on the outskirts of Johannesburg. It was founded by Reverend and Mrs. Blaxall. The blind lived and worked at the institution getting medical treatment and learning crafts.
There are two 8x10 black and white fiber-based prints of this negative in the Constance Stuart Larrabee Collection. EEPA also produced an 8x10 study print for reference purposes.
