"Woman Plowing, Transkei, 1949." Original caption by Constance Stuart Larrabee. Photographic image of a woman navigating a plough through a field. Trees can be seen in the background. During this time, all over the Transkei region, women were at work in the fields because most young and fit men were away working at the mines. Photograph by Constance Stuart Larrabee, 1947.
This photograph was published in Constance Stuart Larrabee's book "Constance Stuart Larrabee: Time Exposure." (Yale Center for British Art: New Haven, CT, 1995.)
In 1947, Constance Staurt Larrabee visited the Transkei. She was there researching the housing problems in Southern Africa.
There is s 4x5 black and white copy negative in the Constance Stuart Larrabee Collection. EEPA also produced an 8x10 study print for reference purposes.
