Scope and Contents

Transkei Woman Holding Baby, 1947. There is a woman standing in front of the doorway of a homestead holding a baby in a blanket. She is wearing a dress, white apron and white nurse's hat. There are other women standing on either side of her wearing traditional Transkei attire. This takes place during a demonstration of how to bathe a baby. The demonstrator, seen here wearing the apron, is trained by the Government Home Welfare Officer to show the Transkei women Westernized hygiene methods. Photograph by Constance Stuart Larrabee, 1947.
In 1947, Constance Staurt Larrabee visited the Transkei. She was there researching the housing problems in Southern Africa.
There are no prints of this negative in the Constance Stuart Larrabee Collection. EEPA produced an 8x10 study print for reference purposes.
