Scope and Contents
Transkei Woman Decorating Her Face, 1947. The photograph is taken from the side of the woman. She is looking at herself in a small circular compact and is putting white clay on her face. The clay is either found by the river or is produced from scraping a soft white stone. She has painted her lips with black nicotine, which is scraped out of the stem of a clay pipe. She is wearing a head wrap, beaded earrings, and beaded necklaces. Photograph by Constance Stuart Larrabee, 1947.
In 1947, Constance Staurt Larrabee visited the Transkei. She was there researching the housing problems in Southern Africa.
There are no prints of this negative in the Constance Stuart Larrabee Collection. EEPA produced an 8x10 study print and 6x6 contact print for reference purposes.
