Scope and Contents
Young Transkei Man and Women, 1947. Several girls stand side by side wearing blankets and jewelry. The man stands off to the side holding a whip. This series of photographs is labeled by Constance Stuart as "Transkei Courting." This traditional courting system usually entails a man chasing the women with his small whip and the one he taps with the whip will become his favorite. Photograph by Constance Stuart Larrabee, 1947.
