Scope and Contents

Printed text on verso reads: "Burkina Faso / Banfora, province de la Comoé / Le rôhnier (Borassus aethiopum) est l'un des arbres très répandu en cette région. Il est très utile et fait partie intégrante de la culture des habitants. Son tronc sert à faire les solives des plafonds. Sa sève est bue comme du vin et accompagne fête, funérailles, rites sacrificiels, reconciliation; ses feuilles entre dans la fabrication des nattes et des paniers; les hampes des feuilles sont utilisées pour battre le riz et les fibres des hampes sont employées pour récurer marmites et calebasses: elles sont, ici, vendues au marché."
Translated postcard caption reads: "Burkina Faso / Banfora, Comoé province. / The ronier (Borassus aethiopum) is a very common tree in this region. It is very useful and an integral part of the culture of the inhabitants. Its trunk is used to make ceiling joists. Its sap is drunk as wine and accompanies festivities, funerals, sacrificial rites, reconciliation; its leaves are used in making mats and baskets; the stems of the leaves are used to thresh rice stalks and fibers are used to scrub pots and calabashes: they are, here, sold at the market."
