Original hand-written text on recto, "Mr Charles. thank you for the news which has been given to me by the captain. I think that for the general the trip to Menton will have done good for him and thtat Mrs Chovet will have some fun in the house during this absence. My health is always very good. The Captain comes almost every day to chat with me in th stables. We have had holidays. They ended in a bloodshed infantry men and holimans. The progress which is spreading in the island is really great. I believe civilization turns these people into thieves, murderers... Please receive a cordial handshake."
