Scope and Contents

Printed caption on verso reads: "In Kenya's Rift Valley, an attentive audience watches two Maasai elders playing mbao. Mbao, the swahili word for 'board,' is the East African version of a game played throughout Africa. Two opposing players or teams move their counters around a twelve to thirty-two hole board, trying to capture their opponent's 'men.' It is a fast moving game in which skill and strategy, not luck, determine the winner. / Rift Valley, Kenya, 1966."
Additional printed text on verso reads: "National Museum of African Art / © Smithsonian Institution, 1983 / Photograph by Eliot Elisofon / 578823 / Printed by Baum Printing Inc., Philadelphia, Pa. U.S.A."
