Manuscript message on verso, message reads, "Anvers, le 17 janvier 1940. Bien cher frère directeur, J'ai très bien réceptionné ton épistole et ton invitation à la calse. Je viendrai donc dimanche prochain glisser mes pieds gelés sous ta table. Mais je ne me sens pas de force à faire face à deux pugilats. Ne prends pas de mauvaise part, si je brille au repas de midi par une glorieuse absence. Mais je serai au garde-à-vous à l'heure fixée c-a-d vers 4h1/2. Comme il fera froid à la mansarde, et que pour me réchauffer, il me faudra, par état, faire appel à toutes mes énergies personnelles je m'abandonne aux bons soins de la maîtresse de logis qui garnira mon lit de couvertures compatissantes. A bientôt." Translated message reads, "Antwerp 17 January 1940. Very dear brother director, I duly acknowledge receipt of your epistle and invitation to the waltz. I shall therefore come next Sunday to slip my frozen feet under your table. But I simply cannot face up to two fist fights. Do not be upset if my glorious absence at midday's lunch is conspicuous. However, I shall be there standing attention, at the appointed time, ie around 4 1/2 p.m.. Since it will be cold in the attic and I shall have to marshall all my personal energies, I shall entrust myself to the care of the Lady of the house who shall cover my bed with merciful blankets.
