African Postcard collection, EEPA 1985-014, Eliot Elisofon Photographic Archives, National Museum of African Art, Smithsonian Institution.
Scope and Contents
Printed text on recto reads: "Copyright 1909 by Underwood & Underwood."
Printed text on verso reads, "A native village. This is a fine village in the Upper Congo valley, near Stanley Falls. The natives here are of more than average intelligence, being quite willing to send their children to the mission schools, and, indeed, many of the girls have been to normal schools and are now teaching the native children. Most of the work is done by the women, the men spending most of their time at gatherings somewhat similar to our clubs. They are really a very intelligent people, taking great interest in learning to read the mission papers, which are being printed in the native dialect."
