Printed text on recto reads: "58 Négresse pétrissant la galette dans la guessâa. Collections ND Phot." Translated caption reads: [Negress kneading a dough into a guessâa.] Woman working dough in a large wooden dish at her doorway, a child sitting to her left.
Postmarked stamps on verso. Postmark reads: "NIMES - 11 MAI 06." Additional stamp on verso, in red ink, reads: "JCB."
Manuscript on verso reads: "Ma chère Thérèse. Deux mots seulement pour te dire que je vais mieux, je mange un peu sans que cela me fasse mal. Cet après-midi maman m'a menee voir le Docteur Ménard lequel doit venir me voir demain matin au lit. Rassures mes maitresses surtout ma soeur Marie-Osmane. Demain maman écrira apres la visite du docteur. J'ai vu tes parents ils vont très bien et me chargent de t'envoyer mille baisers. Demain c'est la foire et je pense bien aller et à mon retour, te faire goûter les berlingots. A bientôt chère Thérèse. Mille caresses. Berthe." Translated verso reads: [My dear Thérèse. A couple of words to let you know that I am doing better, I eat a little and it doesn't hurt me. This afternoon, mummy brought me to see the Docteur Ménard whom is supposed to come to see me tomorrow morning while I am in bed. Reassure my teachers and particularly my sister Marie-Osmane. Tomorrow mummy will write after the doctor's visit. I saw your parents and they are doing well and ask me to send you big smacks. Tomorrow there is a fair and I think about going and when I will be back to make you try candys. See you soon dear Thérèse. Affectionately.
