Scope and Contents
"The temple is oriented east to west according to the 'local north' determined by the river. It is entered through the remains of the Ptolemaic portal at the southwest of the precinct. The temple itself was begun by Ptolemy VI but most of the decoration was not completed until the time of Ptolemy XII Auletes, and the outermost areas were not built until Roman times. The outer surfaces of the temple-encircling walls are decorated with colossal relief figures, predictably divided in the subjects of their representations between the realms of the two gods, Haroeris, the Healer, and sobek, the crocodile god." [Wilkinson R., 2000: The Complete Temples of Ancient Egypt. Thames and Hudson]. The photograph depicts the temple enclosure wall as well as, on the eastern side, a small independent chapel of Hathor. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon was on assignment for American Institute of Architects, directing the Egyptian portion of the documentary on Ancient Egypt, March 1965 and September 1965.
