Scope and Contents
Original title reads, "Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Premier of Western Region of Nigeria, campaigning in Sokoto for his party, the Action group, for the federal elections. He is in the green robe at the right-hand microphone, speaking in English; an interpreter at Awo's right translates his speech into Hausa for the crowd of about 2,500. Awo talks about the local Action Group candidate for the federal House of Representatives, Mallam Haruna, formerly Sokoto police chief, and a cousin of the Sardauna of Sokoto." This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon was on assignment for Life magazine and traveled to Africa from August 18, 1959 to December 20, 1959.
