Scope and Contents

"The outer wall of the Great Enclosure (sometimes called Elliptical Building), 10 m high and 5 m thick, built of granite blocks, dressed only on the outer face. this wall, with the Conical Tower, is the perfection of coursed dry-stone masonry at Great Zimbabwe. The blocks give scale, texture, sparkle, and interest to an otherwise overpowering monument." [Garlake P., 2002: Early Art and Architecture of Africa; Great Zimbabwe and the Southern African Interior. Oxford University Press]. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon was on assignment for Life magazine and traveled to Africa from August 18, 1959 to December 20, 1959.
