Scope and Contents
"The Gobirau mosque that some say dates from the fifteenth century was not repaired from the time of the jihad (1805) until the 1920s. The hasumiyar Gobirau, the tower in Katsina, is not the actual minaret dating back to 1702 but in fact conceals the mud spike which is all that remains of the original mosque." This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon was on assignment for Life magazine and traveled to Africa from August 18, 1959 to December 20, 1959.
