Scope and Contents

"The Sankore Mosque has a courtyard surrounded by enclosed arcaded galleries and the prayer-hall. The original building dates from the fourteenth-fifteenth centuries, and the galleries and the buttressing of the minaret were probably added in the late 1840s." [Frishman M. and Khan H.-U., 1994: The Mosque. Thames and London Ltd.]. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon traveled to Africa from March 17, 1970 to July 17,1970. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon was on assignment for Life magazine and traveled to Africa from August 18, 1959 to December 20, 1959.
