Scope and Contents

"President Mobutu served as the chairman of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) in 1967-68 and Congo hosted the OAU summit of 1967. For the event a multimillion dollar 'OAU Village' was constructed in Kinshasa that now is used as an exclusive resort and guest quarters for international gatherings." [F. Scott Bobb, 1999: Historical Dictionary of Democratic Republic of Congo, The Scarecrow Press, Inc.]. The photograph depicts a ceramic mural by Maurice Antoine on building previously used for the 1967 O.A.U. summit. The building is located on Mont Ngaliema (former mount Stanley). This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon traveled to Africa from March 17, 1970 to July 17, 1970.
