Scope and Contents

The Boulevard du 30 Juin ( French for Boulevard of the 30th of June) is a major road in the capital city the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kinshasa. With a length of approximately 5 km, the Boulevard connects the southern area of La Gombe, the political and business district of Kinshasa, with Kintambo and the Bay of Ngaliema in the west. The road is the central artery of the city and contains most of its major political and economic institutions. During Belgian rule of the Congo, the road was known as Boulevard Albert I (of Belgium) but when the Congo gained independence the road was re-dedicated to commemorate the event, which occurred on June 30, 1960. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon was on assignment for Life magazine and traveled to Africa from August 18, 1959 to December 20, 1959.
