Scope and Contents
"The physical structure and morphology of Ibadan represent a convergence of two traditions of urbanism -a non-mechanistic, pre-industrial African tradition more akin to the mediaeval urbanism in Europe, and a technologically-orientated European tradition. The morphology of Ibadan exhibits three dominant characteristics, each of which has a significant effect on the functioning of the city. The most obvious is the extensive confused mass of housing which occupies a large proportion of the city. The second feature is the small proportion of land devoted to roads, especially in the older half of the city. Finally the indigenous population is still in the majority and fails to see that their home ground constitutes cause for alarm." [Lloyd P., Mabogunje A., Awe B., 1967: The City of Ibadan. Cambridge University Press]. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon was on assignment for Life magazine and traveled to Africa from August 18, 1959 to December 20, 1959.
