Scope and Contents

Original title reads, "Mine boys walking along path after completing day's work at Daggafontein Mines, Ltd., a gold and uranium mining operation adminitered by Anglo American Corp., of South Africa, Ltd., near a town called Springs, and east of Johannesburg, on the famous Rand (short for Witwatersrand). Rock in back is a 200-foot high pile of quartzite; each rock was picked out from among gold-bearing rocks by hand after the rock was brought up from the mine. The pile is so heavy it has sunk 16 feet into the ground. Boys are on their way to their compound nearby." [Elisofon field notes, August 1959-December 1959]
This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon was on assignment for Life magazine and traveled to Africa from August 18, 1959 to December 20, 1959.
