Scope and Contents
Original title reads, "Mine boys walking along path after completing day's work at Daggafontein Mines, Ltd., a gold and uranium mining operation adminitered by Anglo American Corp., of South Africa, Ltd., near a town called Springs, and east of Johannesburg, on the famous Rand (short for Witwatersrand). Rock in back is a 200-foot high pile of quartzite; each rock was picked out from among gold-bearing rocks by hand after the rock was brought up from the mine. The pile is so heavy it has sunk 16 feet into the ground. Trees are weeping willows; boys are on their way to their compound nearby." [Elisofon field notes, August 1959-December 1959]
This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon was on assignment for Life magazine and traveled to Africa from August 18, 1959 to December 20, 1959.
