Scope and Contents
"Despite exploration that began during the colonial era, there was no petroleum production until 1975, when significant deposits discovered offshore in 1970 and 1972 began to be exploited. A refinery was built with Italian participation in 1968 to process imported oil. The plant has a refining capacity of 17,000 barrels per day." [F. Scott Bobb, 1999: Historical Dictionary of Democratic Republic of Congo, The Scarecrow Press]. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon traveled to Africa from March 17, 1970 to July 17, 1970.
