Scope and Contents
Original title reads, "The Ekulu coal mine is one of five currently being operated by the statutory Nigerian Coal Corporation. Nigeria is the only country in Equatorial West Africa at present producing coal. The workers, classified as 'general surface labor,' are pushing coal tubs which have been brought from the mine to the terminus of an aerial ropeway, in which the coal will be carried to a central distribution area." This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon was on assignment for Life magazine and traveled to Africa from August 18, 1959 to December 20, 1959.
