Collection Photographer

Elisofon, Eliot

Collection Citation

Eliot Elisofon Field Collection, EEPA 1973-001, Eliot Elisofon Photographic Archives, National Museum of African Art, Smithsonian Institution

Scope and Contents

"Young boys, in attitudes ranging from mock-fighting to a British-style salute, pose before a house in Wadi Halfa, on the Sudan-Egypt border. The drawings and inscriptions on the wall behind them indicate that the owner of the house has made the sacred pilgrimage to Mecca." [Elisofon E., Van Der Post L., 1964: The Nile, The Viking Press]. During his trip to Sudan, Elisofon visited the Upper Nile region (now, A`ali an-Nil region). This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon was on assignment for Life magazine and traveled to Africa from January 8, 1947 to end of June 1947.
