Scope and Contents

"Close-fitting conical caps or bonnets worn by Dogon men are made from locally woven narrow-strip cloth. Hats of this style may be dyed with natural earth-brown and indigo pigments. This style of cap is an old one, in existence in the Bandiagara escarpment region of Mali even before the arrival of the dogon." [Mullen Kreamer C., 1995: Practical Beauty: Headgear for Daily Wear. Crowning Achievements, UCLA Fowler Museum of Cultural History]. During his trip to Mali, Elisofon visited the Dogon people in Sanga (Sangha), a group of thirteen villages lying east of Bandiagara at the top of an escarpment. The most important villages are Ogol-du-Haut and Ogol-du-Bas. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon traveled to Africa from March 17, 1970 to July 17, 1970.
